It Takes an Island is an ongoing body of work that explores the journey of coming of age in Bali, an island in the midst of profound cultural, economic, and social transformation. As Bali modernizes and faces the influx of tourism, digital nomadism, and gentrification, its youth are growing up in an environment where longstanding tradition intersects with ever-changing modern influence. Through this lens, this project captures the everyday lives of the youth living in Bali, documenting not only their journey and struggles of finding themselves, but also their attempts at juggling the preservation of cultural identity, while adapting to the pressures of modernity. In its essence, this project aims to provide a sneak peek of what it means to grow up on an island straddling the old and the new.
